The lifeblood of every organisation is its employees. A recent survey by VECCI stated that roughly 4 in 10 employees want to leave their job.

So how does an employer keep their staff loyal, productive and involved?

Engage them. Employees want to feel like they’re making a positive contribution to the organisation. Involve them in meetings and ask their opinions on decision making, ask for their feedback. A sense of involvement is highly important for keeping staff engaged and interested.

Get to know your employees on a personal level; not just on a professional level. Knowing what motivates them will assist in increasing their loyalty to you.

Combine work and fun; including social functions and group exercises .This promotes team building and a sense of belonging.

Respect your employees and recognise their contributions to your organisation. Recognition from a senior manager will give your employees confidence in themselves and in their work.

Reward your staff; keep them motivated.

Having highly engaged and productive employees will keep those wheels of your business turning.

Legal People are delighted to be a research partner for the 2012 ALPMA Legal Salary Survey. If you are a legal employer, don't forget to participate to receive your free copy of the survey. The survey closes 18 May, 2012.

Participation now open to all Australian & NZ law firms.

The Australian Legal Practice Management Association (ALPMA) today launched the Australian & New Zealand Legal Industry Salary Survey 2012, proudly sponsored by Legal People, a specialist legal recruiting consultancy based in Melbourne.

The ALPMA Salary Survey provides a comprehensive overview of salaries paid for all positions at legal firms across Australia and New Zealand.

“This year we are making significant improvements to the survey to enable firms to better benchmark themselves with “like” law firms” and to inform their retention and recruitment strategies moving forward,” ALPMA National President, Warrick McLean said.

“For the first time, we will be asking about the types of salary packages and benefits offered. The survey will also provide a deeper insight into the employment profile at law firms in terms of the breakdown between full time, part time, contract and casual positions.”

“This year’s survey also includes information relating to legal firms intentions regarding recruitment and salaries over the next 12 months,” he said.

These improvements have been made possible by the financial support of Legal People.

“Legal People are pleased to be associated with the ALPMA Legal Industry Salary Survey 2012,” Legal People Partner, Sharon Henderson said.

“This survey will provide greater insight into actual salaries and benefits being paid by law firms across the country, enhancing the great work that ALPMA has been doing,” she said

The survey is open from today until 18 May to legal firms in Australia and New Zealand. To participate, legal firms simply need to open this link in their internet browser: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/ALPMA_SalarySurvey_2012

Every firm who completes the survey will receive the ALPMA 2012 Legal Industry Salary Survey Report free of charge as an incentive to encourage strong participation from across the industry. This report is available for $550 for non-participating ALPMA members or $2,200 for non-members.

The Australian & NZ Legal Industry Salary Survey is a key part of ALPMA’s legal industry research program, which also includes ALPMA’s Legal Industry Financial Benchmarking program, conducted in partnership with Crowe Horwath.

Legal Salary Website!

www.legalsalary.com.au

Are you earning what you are worth? Want to find out?

Now you can…

Legal People have launched a new legal industry specific salary website where you can find out if you are earning what you are worth in REAL TIME.

This site was specifically developed for members of the Australian legal community (including lawyers, legal secretaries & assistants, law clerks/paralegals, practice managers and HR) to enable you to easily share legal salary data and help ascertain what people in the Australian legal industry are really earning, using an anonymous online platform.

Salary contributions to the site are driven by people just like you – so the more people that contribute their salary data the more beneficial this salary resource becomes for everyone! The site enables you to filter your salary search criteria by a range of variables such areas of law, years of experience, location, law firm &/or company size, gender, level of education, other benefits/perks, the number of people you supervise…. to name a few.

It’s FREE, completely ANONYMOUS and updated in REAL TIME. You can use the site to keep an eye on salary trends, check out your market worth before or after your next pay review, or log in to look for that new job. You can even receive email alerts when other people have entered their salary data in your area of expertise so that you can stay updated!

LegalSalary.com.au works on an honesty-based ‘get to give’ model whereby all salary data is entered by (and shared by) Australian legal professionals for the benefit of the entire legal community. Any inflated or inconsistent salary entries can be ‘flagged’ as suspicious by other members of the community or by Legal People and quickly removed from the system to ensure the accuracy of data is maintained. The site also makes use of the median (as opposed to the average) to report cumulative salary results, helping to lessen the impact of any ‘extreme’ salary entries.

One of the key differences of the site over the traditional ‘once a year’ salary survey is that salary data is continually added by site visitors on a daily basis, with the salary database updated in real time and available for instant searching. Lawyers can also search by their area of law/expertise whereas other traditional surveys tend to break down salary data only by level of experience and size of law firm.

Sharon Henderson, Partner of Legal People, explains that “as salary entries to the site continue to grow beyond the 1,294 we have already captured, our hope is that it becomes an invaluable and indispensable research tool that is constantly referred to by all members of the legal profession, whether it be job seekers, employees, Legal HR professionals and employers alike.”

Take a sneak peak, click on the link below, enter your details and see how you shape up! It will only take a couple of minutes.

Pass it on!

Always wanted to know what your fellow colleagues and friends are really earning in the legal industry but afraid to ask? Direct them to the following link: www.legalsalary.com.au and start comparing today.

Follow us on Twitter @LegalPeopleMel

Yes, we are posting jobs to Twitter so for those of you that love a tweet, you can now receive regular updates on new job postings as they happen.

However, whilst we wouldn’t like to do without the advances in technology, and social networking sites are becoming increasingly popular, it is becoming more important to ensure that your public on-line reputation is protected and reflects the same professional image that you portray in person.

As part of their recruitment process, prospective employers are using the internet to search your on-line profiles prior to considering making offers. So be aware of what kind of image your photos and comments will create in the mind of a potential employer both today and in the future. Conduct a Google search of your own name to see what future employers can read about you.

Whilst these photos and comments can be a laugh with friends, these posts could be perceived as unprofessional when viewed by your professional colleagues.

To protect your on-line reputation, take the time to check and adjust your privacy settings and keep your social and business on-line networks separate.

But building a professional presence on-line can also help raise your profile. If you are a member of an industry association, are accredited to professional articles, or contribute to respected forums, then this could be favourable marketing. For example, maintain an updated profile on professional networking sites like LinkedIn.
