It may take a few phone calls and e-mails but it’s for your benefit, most funds will assist you with roll-over, if you want to consolidate all funds into one.

In July 2011 Legal People launched the first ever real-time legal salary website. This site was specifically developed for members of the Australian legal community (including lawyers, legal secretaries & assistants, law clerks/paralegals, practice managers and HR) to enable you to easily share legal salary data and help ascertain what people in the Australian legal industry are really earning, using an anonymous on-line platform. Is it time that your salary was reviewed?  Do you feel like you are adding greater value to the business now, rather than when your current salary was first determined?

For many organisations, there is usually a timetable of performance feedback, as well as salary reviews.  Salary reviews have generally been discussed amongst management prior to your meeting, taking into consideration many factors, including:

• your performance
• market comparisons
• your individual role and responsibilities
• your experience and knowledge; and
• the current demand within your speciality/area of practice

In addition, businesses will also have taken into consideration:

• the company’s financial performance; and
• the current financial market

Whether you are employed in an organisation with a formal review structure or not, when discussing your salary you must be prepared to discuss these points and provide supporting information where you have:

• contributed over and above usual requirements
• demonstrated leadership

Salary survey information can be used as a guide but is often taken from a small sample of participants.  This does not take into consideration many varying factors within roles or additional benefits, so can cause some inaccuracies or inconsistencies.

So how does an employer keep their staff loyal, productive and involved?

1. Engage them. Employees want to feel like they’re making a positive contribution to the organisation. Involve them in meetings and ask their opinions on decision making, ask for their feedback. A sense of involvement is highly important for keeping staff engaged and interested.
2. Get to know your employees on a personal level; not just on a professional level. Knowing what motivates them will assist in increasing their loyalty to you.
3. Combine work and fun; including social functions and group exercises .This promotes team building and a sense of belonging.
4. Respect your employees and recognise their contributions to your organisation. Recognition from a senior manager will give your employees confidence in themselves and in their work.
5. Reward your staff; keep them motivated.

Having highly engaged and productive employees will keep those wheels of your business turning.
